Sourcing from Guangzhou for the Middle East: modest wear, occasion wear, SABER and the Ramadan calendar

Long dresses, abaya fabric, occasion wear and kidswear — plus the Saudi and Gulf import paperwork, and why your calendar has to follow Ramadan, not January.

Buyers from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Iraq and Jordan come to Guangzhou for a different basket of goods than European buyers, and they work to a different calendar. Both matter more than price.

1. What Middle East buyers actually buy

  • Modest wear and abaya — long dresses, kaftans, open abayas and coordinated sets. Guangzhou has fewer ready-made abaya specialists than you may expect: the practical route is long dresses and maxi silhouettes from Shisanhang floors 4–9 and Baima, or fabric from Zhongda (中大) with your own production.
  • Occasion and evening wear — the Gulf wedding and Eid market is large and margin-rich. Shisanhang floors 7–9 and U:US / APM carry embellished, occasion-ready pieces.
  • Kidswear — high birth rates and strong gifting culture make childrenswear a core category, not a side one. Shahe and Jindong carry volume.
  • Plus sizes — structurally strong demand. Shisanhang floors 10–12 and Baima.
  • Accessories — scarves, shawls and belts sell alongside every order.

2. The calendar follows Ramadan, not January

The Islamic calendar moves roughly eleven days earlier each year, which means your buying calendar moves with it.

Season What to buy When to order in Guangzhou
Ramadan & Eid al-Fitr Occasion wear, kidswear, gifting 4–5 months before Ramadan
Eid al-Adha & summer Light fabrics, family sets 3–4 months ahead
Wedding season Evening and occasion wear Continuous, peaks after Eid
Winter (Gulf, Levant) Coats, knitwear June–August

Two practical notes: markets are quietest on Friday afternoons (Friday prayer), and during Ramadan many suppliers work shorter hours — plan meetings in the morning.

3. Shipping: sea is your default

Option Transit to Jebel Ali / Dammam Best for
Sea, FCL 20ft / 40ft 18–28 days Main seasonal orders
Sea, LCL 22–35 days Smaller or mixed orders
Air cargo 4–7 days Samples, urgent restocks
Express courier 3–6 days Documents and samples only

A 20ft container takes roughly 8,000–15,000 garments depending on packing; a 40ft roughly double. Give your freight agent the HS codes and declared value your country requires — duties and taxes are set at destination.

4. Import paperwork: check before you ship

Gulf countries have their own conformity and labelling regimes, and they change.

  • Saudi Arabia operates the SABER platform: shipments typically need product and shipment conformity certificates issued before arrival. Confirm the current requirement for your product category with your importer or a conformity body before you ship.
  • UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain each apply their own labelling and conformity rules — Arabic fibre-composition and care labelling is commonly required.
  • Country of origin labelling must be accurate and permanent.

Requirements change often and differ by product. Verify with your customs broker or the official authority in your country, and build the certificate cost and lead time into your order — this is a compliance question, not a formality.

5. Payment and terms

  • USD is the working currency for most Gulf trade; RMB is accepted at many larger booths.
  • T/T with 30% deposit is standard for production; letters of credit are common for larger shipments.
  • Confirm the Incoterm (FOB Guangzhou vs CIF your port) — it decides who pays freight and who carries the risk at sea.
  • Ask for the bank account printed on the official invoice, never a personal account given over the phone.

6. Working with suppliers

  • Many booths in Shisanhang and Zhanxi have experience with Gulf buyers and keep longer, more covered styles — ask to see them rather than browsing the open rails.
  • WhatsApp is the default channel across the Middle East; email is for invoices and documents.
  • Photograph booth numbers with the goods. Disputes are settled with screenshots and your packing list.

7. A realistic 3-day trip

Day Where Why
1 morning Shisanhang (十三行) Long dresses, occasion wear, plus sizes
1 afternoon Hongmian / U:US (红棉 / U:US) Trend reference and styling ideas
2 morning Baima (白马) Higher-grade modest and occasion styles
2 afternoon Zhongda (中大) Abaya and kaftan fabric, trims, own production
3 Jindong (锦东) or Shahe (沙河) Kidswear volume and stock lots

Tell us your product list and target season, and we will tell you which floors to walk and what to budget per piece.
