Buyers from Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and the rest of Central Asia shop Guangzhou differently from European buyers: they buy heavier, earlier and by rail. This guide covers what actually changes.
1. What to buy: winter is the season
Outerwear is not a side category for this region — it is the main event. Budget most of your order for:
- Down jackets and padded coats — Zhanxi (站西) and Jindong (锦东) are the strongest sources; Baima (白马) for higher-grade women's coats.
- Knitwear — sweaters, cardigans and thermal layers, sold in the knitwear halls of Zhanxi and at Shahe (沙河) at the lowest prices.
- Plus sizes — demand for sizes above EU 46 is structurally higher here than in Western Europe. Shisanhang floors 10–12 and Baima carry fuller size runs.
- Kidswear — school coats and winter sets sell well; Shahe and Jindong both carry volume kidswear.
Lead time is the trap. Winter goods must be ordered roughly four to six months before the season. Chinese New Year (late January to February) shuts the markets for one to two weeks, and production queues fill up from August.

2. Rail beats sea
For inland destinations, rail is usually faster than sea and far cheaper than air.
| Route | Typical transit | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| China–Europe rail (Xi'an / Chongqing → Moscow, Minsk) | 15–22 days | Full containers, winter bulk |
| Via Khorgos / Alashankou into Kazakhstan | 12–18 days | Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan |
| Manzhouli / Erenhot crossings | 12–20 days | Eastern Russia |
| Air cargo from Guangzhou | 5–10 days | Samples, urgent top-ups |
| Sea to St Petersburg / Novorossiysk | 35–45 days | Large low-priority lots |
Ask your freight agent for a door-to-door, all-in quote that includes rail haulage, border crossing, customs clearance and last-mile delivery. A quote that stops at the border is not a quote.
3. EAEU paperwork — plan for it
Goods entering Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan or Armenia fall under Eurasian Economic Union technical regulations. Textiles and light-industry goods generally require a conformity document (commonly referenced as EAC), plus:
- Commercial invoice and packing list, ideally in Russian
- Russian-language labelling with fibre composition and care symbols
- HS codes matching the destination's classification
- A local consignee or customs broker to file the declaration
Check the current rules before you ship. Technical regulations and conformity procedures change, and the details depend on the product type and the destination country. Confirm requirements with your customs broker or the official EAEU resources for your market, and build the cost and time into your order.
4. Payment and compliance
Payment is the question Russian and Central Asian buyers ask most, and the answer has moved.
- RMB settlement through banks that still handle cross-border CNY is the most common working route.
- USD payments are increasingly subject to extra checks and delays.
- Compliance first. Sanctions regimes and banking restrictions change frequently. Use only channels your bank confirms are lawful for your transaction, keep full documentation, and take professional advice before moving money. Do not rely on informal or unofficial transfer schemes — the risk falls entirely on you.
- Never pay 100% up front to a booth you have just met. 30% deposit and 70% before shipment remains the normal structure.
5. Sizing: sell in the local grid
Your customers think in Russian sizes (44, 46, 48 … 56+), not S/M/L. Before ordering, agree with the booth:
- The exact size run you need, in centimetres, not letters.
- Whether each size comes in proportion, or one size dominates the pack.
- Whether the size label can be changed to your own — most production orders allow this.
6. Communication
- Telegram is the default messaging app for Russia and much of Central Asia — put your Telegram handle on your site, not just WhatsApp.
- Russian-language invoices and packing lists save days at customs.
- An interpreter who speaks Russian is worth the day rate when you are placing a production order.
7. A realistic 3-day trip
| Day | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 morning | Zhanxi (站西) | Outerwear, denim, knitwear — the core of a Russian order |
| 1 afternoon | Baima (白马) | Quality benchmark for coats and plus sizes |
| 2 morning | Shahe (沙河) | Price floor: kidswear, knitwear, basic layers |
| 2 afternoon | Zhongda (中大) | Fabric and trims if you develop your own styles |
| 3 | Jindong (锦东), Baiyun | Stock lots and branded surplus, go before 15:30 |
Winter orders placed in June to August arrive with time to spare. Orders placed in October usually do not.
